My name is Miguel Navarro. But you might’ve already known that prior to clicking this page. I am a Freshman at the College of Southern Nevada and my major is Journalism.
Well, it was a pretty easy decision for me. Around the 7th grade I was able to notice I had a thing for writing. It was something I found fun and enjoyed doing. While most students groaned over essays, I oddly enough enjoyed.
Growing up I played video games. Games like Mortal Kombat: Deception, Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom, Smackdown vs Raw 2006 and Halo 3 (what a variety). Most of these games I probably shouldn’t have been playing but I seem to have turned out pretty normal. I mean after all, video games don’t make people violent. So how do games and journalism connect? Well as I entered middle I discovered video game sites like IGN, Polygon, and Kotaku. And it hit me that people actually get paid to write about games and pop culture. It only made sense to connect a passion (video games) to something I was good at (writing).
Where’d I’d Like to End Up
I always give people two answers when asked this. Games journalism is the field i’d like to work in. My go to answer is working for IGN (Imagine Games Network). While IGN is a place i’d absolutely love to work at, my dream job is working at Kinda Funny. A small company with only 7 people (as of now) that have a dedicated and positive fan base. Ending up at either of these companies would be a dream come true.
